Dizzy?
Suffering through bouts
of vertigo?
it may be your neck.

Cervicogenic Dizziness

Many people deal with constant dizziness, or repeated bouts of vertigo, without understanding its source.

Some will try vertigo solutions to common vestibular disorders, such as BPPV (i.e. the epley manourvre), but do not get the immediate relief that is expected.

Some vestibular relief exercises can actually make their symptoms worse.

Others will seek prolonged investigation with neurologists, but be left with no specific answer as to the cause.

The exact pathways whereby your neck can trigger dizziness / vertigo is not fully understood.

However, the neck assessment that can reveal the joint restrictions seen in cervicogenic dizziness is simple and safe, and treatment can eliminate the dizziness with as little as one session.

Signs that you may have
Cervicogenic Dizziness

  • Intermittent or constant feelings of imbalance, unsteadiness, disorientation.

  • Feeling the room spin, sometimes severe enough to cause nausea and vomiting.

  • Sense of tension or pain in the back of the head or upper neck.

  • Symptoms brought on in a variety of postures and positions, and often with specific neck movements.

Our Services

GB Physiotherapy offers a range of services to assess and treat cervicogenic dizziness.

At your initial appointment, you will have your neck assessed for specific restrictions in the upper cervical spine (C0-3).

If these restrictions are present, gentle manual treatment (without manipulation / adjustment or 'cracking') is used to restore the normal motion. This first session will settle the dizziness in many people (some will require up to four sessions).

Follow up appointments will review the mobility of the upper neck joints, and develop a plan of stretching and strengthening exercises, along with postural advice, to provide the best self-management strategies for you to remain symptom free.
